Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian mother detained in Iran, has begun a new hunger strike along with her husband, Richard Ratcliffe.
She was jailed for five years in 2016 following a conviction for spying, which she denies.
The decision came following the fifth birthday of their daughter, Gabriella, who has not been allowed to leave Iran following her mother’s arrest, and is living with her maternal grandparents.
Richard Ratcliffe has requested the Iranian authorities to:
- Immediately release Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe;
- Allow an immediate visit to Nazanin by the British Embassy to check on her health. He says that after three years it is an outrage this continues to be blocked by Iran;
- If no release is granted to her in the next few weeks, issue a visa for him to go to Iran.
British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt urged Iran to “do the right thing” and release Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
