Iran’s Steel Production Target “Achievable”

By John Lee.

According to a report from Platts, Iran’s target of boosting its steelmaking capacity from about 33 million mt/year now to 55 million mt/year by 2025 is achievable and could even be met ahead of deadline.

Mohammad Abka, managing director of steel sector consultancy FIECO, is quoted as saying that the industry might face a shortage of both concentrated and non-concentrated iron ore in future and will have to import some of the required material if new reserves are not discovered.

He also said Iran’s steel exports would likely increase to around 10.5 million mt/year by 2025, below the 20 million mt/year initially planned.
