Iran and Iraq discuss Increased Cooperation

Ranking diplomats from Iran and Iraq held two meetings of a joint political committee on Sunday to explore avenues for the expansion of ties between Tehran and Baghdad, particularly in the economic field.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari and Iraq’s Deputy Foreign Minister Nazar Khairallah co-chaired two separate sessions of Iran-Iraq joint political committee in Baghdad on Sunday.

In the gatherings, attended by economic and legal experts, the two sides discussed the ways to promote economic cooperation between Iran and Iraq and remove the obstacles to bilateral trade.

The other subjects raised in the meetings included strategic cooperation in the energy industry and transportation, banking interaction, concerns about dust particles, visas for the businesspeople and ordinary travelers, and extradition of prisoners.

In the first meeting, Jaberi Ansari stressed the need for the settlement of the problems that Iranian merchants and companies face in trade with Iraq, and for plans to relax trade regulations between the two countries.

The top Iranian diplomat, who travelled to Iraq on Saturday for the new round of joint political commission meetings, has met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and the Arab country’s Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri.
