An Iranian economist said municipalities should abandon use of inefficient methods of financing in order to avoid urban problems and prepare the ground for more development in metropolitan areas.
“Municipalities should leave inefficient methods of financing such as selling density since it is the origin of many urban dilemmas,” Hossein Mohammadpour Zarandi said.
Another challenge is the issue of urban revenues and reliance on unsustainable municipal finance, he said, adding unsustainable methods are obstacles in the way of urban development.
“Duties, taxes on properties, finance, recycling technology are sustainable methods of financing,” Mohammadpour Zarandi added.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian economist referred to an upcoming international economic conference scheduled to be held in the Iranian capital later this month, and said, “We hope the conference and its achievements can help solve the problems of city managers to reduce developmental problems.”
The international conference, featuring urban economy, is slated to be held in Tehran on May 19 at Imam Sadiq University. A large number of leading domestic and foreign scientific and economic figures will attend the event.
“Economy of smart city”, “economy of urban tourism”, “economy of urban infrastructures”, “economic culture of city and citizenship education”, and “urban dilemmas, the environment, and air pollution,” are among the major topics to be discussed the event.
