Grandson of Ayatollah Khomeini Loses Election Appeal

By John Lee.

The grandson of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of Iran’s Islamic Republic, has lost an appeal to be allowed to stand in this month’s election in Iran.

Hassan Khomeini (43), a reformist and an ally of President Hassan Rouhani, had hoped to stand as a candidate for the Assembly of Experts, but was banned by The Guardian Council, a clerical vetting body.

According to a report from Reuters, the publication on Wednesday of the final list of candidates for the Assembly makes it clear that the Guardian Council intends to keep reformists and moderates away from this crucial clerical body.
